Tony O’Shea was arguably the city’s greatest press photographer in the latter half of the century. His ability to capture the reality of a situation was such that some luminaries feared being photographed by him. As Colm Tóibín once put it, “he is not the sort of photographer who helps politicians to win elections.”

Dublin Zoo opened in 1831, with 46 mammals and 72 birds donated by London Zoo. In 1840 the zoo made the radical decision to charge only a penny for entry on Sundays, thus endearing itself to many Dubliners. One of the best-loved zoo-keepers was Jimmy Kenny, who oversaw elephant rides in the 1950s and 1960s. Jimmy was the father of Pat Kenny, one of Ireland’s most famous broadcasters. Elephant rides are a thing of the past now, of course.

A rare photograph of then-Taoiseach Éamon de Valera smiling. De Valera is being greeted by Dr. Bethal Solomons at the Rotunda Bicentenary Congress. Dr. Solomons was “a world famous obstetrician and gynaecologist, rugby international, horseman, leader of liberal Jewry and of Irish literary and artistic renaissance.” Master of the Rotunda Hospital, he won ten caps on the Irish rugby team, was the first president of the Liberal Synagogue in Dublin, and was even mentioned in Finnegans Wake.

McMahon recreated the photos as faithfully as possible, using the same exposure settings, in the same locations – even at the same time of day and in the same weather. In the photo on the left the shadows on the Custom House – the large domed building in the foreground – are in the exact same position. Almost everything else has changed.

The artist Lucian Freud, a grandson of Sigmund Freud, chats with Brendan Behan outside the Mansion House. Freud was a frequent visitor to Dublin in the 1950s. Behan was a novelist, poet and playwright, as well as a former member of the IRA. This picture was taken two years before his first major success, The Quare Fellow.
