Service medal awarded to John O'Grady posthumously for his contribution to the Irish Volunteers during the Easter rising 1916.
John O'Grady, Irish Volunteer.
John O'Grady joined the Volunteers just four months before the Easter Rising. Based in Jacob's biscuit factory, he was one of the 15 cyclists sent out be Thomas MacDonagh to draw off the fire of the British soldiers besieging Boland's Mills. As John cycled near the Royal College of Surgeons on Saint Stephen's Green, he was shot and mortally wounded. O'Grady was posthumously awarded this 1916 service medal as the only fatality of his battalion during Easter week.

      Bronze medal, depicts the death of Cú Chulainn on one side and reads 'Seactmain na Cásga 1916 John O'Grady' on the other. The medal has a fabric that is green and orange also.
      The box is green and reads 'Seacmain na Carga 1916' in gold lettering.
      The medal is in great condition, the box is worn with some staining and peeling.
