A black and white photograph of the Theatre Royal. The main sign over the door says 'Glenn Ford in Blackboard Jungle'. It also has posters for the Dublin International Festival of Music and Arts on the side.

This is a photograph of the Theatre Royal, with its striking Art Deco facade and a Moorish-inspired interior. It was the largest cinema in Dublin, with an auditorium that housed 3,800 people. The International Festival of Music and the Arts is being advertised, and Blackboard Jungle is showing. The Royal had a resident 25-piece orchestra and its own dance troupe, the Royalettes. Judy Garland played here in 1951.

An Ulster Bank Limited cheque from Ben Dunne Snr. to Ben Dunne Jnr. for £100 dated 4/6/1980

This cheque was written by the late Ben Dunne Snr. to his son, but never cashed. Ben Dunne Snr. was the founder of Dunnes Stores, one of Ireland’s largest supermarket chains. The first Dunnes opened in 1944 in Cork. By 1966 the business had expanded greatly, with nine branches in Dublin, and Dunne bought two disused factories in the Dublin suburb of Cornellstown and turned them into his first supermarket.

A metal printing plate for Jameson whiskey which says 'The quality of John Jamerson three star whiskey is the same the wide world over' in mirrored writing. Can also be dated 1900s.

Dublin is indefatigably proud of its reputation as a boozy town. Jameson whiskey was first made here in 1780, when a distillery opened on Bow Street. This plate was used for printing advertisements. It assures readers that “The quality of John Jameson Three Star whiskey is the same the wide world over.”

The great Maureen O’Hara, star of The Quiet Man and Miracle on 34th Street, was born in Ranelagh in 1920. Now aged 91, she lives in Glengarriff in Cork. O’Hara trained as an actor at the Abbey Theatre and the Ena Mary Burke School of Drama and Elocution in Dublin. Her father owned shares in Shamrock Rovers F.C. and she remains a fan.

A colour poster for Guinness with the caption 'Black is beautiful' with a spread of pints of Guinness underneath.

This Black is Beautiful advert is one of the classic Guinness posters. Also a press advert, but known mostly as a poster, it would have featured as a full 48 sheet billboard. The glasses featured in the advert are known as Waterford tankards – the prototypes were produced by Waterford Glass, and then mass produced. They were used as the glass for draught Guinness from c. 1964 to 1982 – the first time that Guinness had designed a glass for its beer. The Waterford Tankard was replaced by a straight sided pint glass.
