LMODService medal awarded to John O'Grady posthumously for his contribution to the Irish Volunteers during the Easter rising 1916.
John O'Grady, Irish Volunteer.
John O'Grady joined the Volunteers just four months before the Easter Rising. Based in Jacob's biscuit factory, he was one of the 15 cyclists sent out be Thomas MacDonagh to draw off the fire of the British soldiers besieging Boland's Mills. As John cycled near the Royal College of Surgeons on Saint Stephen's Green, he was shot and mortally wounded. O'Grady was posthumously awarded this 1916 service medal as the only fatality of his battalion during Easter week.
