Scope and content

Print of a black and white photo of George Colley, Séan Lemass and Jack Lynch following Lynch’s victory to succeed Lemass as Taoiseach and Colley’s loss in 1966 taken by Colman Doyle.
Colman Doyle was one of the first documentary-style photographers in Ireland. And this picture is a classic. It was taken in 1966 just after the Fianna Fáil leadership election. George Colley has just been informed that he’s lost the election to Jack Lynch, who is calling his wife to tell her the news. Seán Lemass, the retiring Taoiseach, is in the centre. Lynch was Lemass’s preferred candidate. He went on to serve two terms as Taoiseach.
