Estella Solomons was a prolific printmaker producing 90 etchings and a small number of lithographs and woodcuts. She attended the Metropolitan School of Art and Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, receiving tuition from printmaker George Atkinson and painter William Orpen, and was the first artist in Ireland to purchase her own printing press. She specialized in picturesque views of Dublin, which recall Whistler's urban scenes and was familiar with Rembrandt's etchings having visited Amsterdam in 1906. Solomons was proficient at combining crisp etching lines with finer hatched lines to convey atmosphere and to capture a moment in time.

One of the biggest sensations yet reported took place to-day, the military barracks at Mallow being successfully raided. One soldier was killed, and a large quantity of arms and ammunition, including a machine gun, was captured. The raiders got clear away with their booty, and suffered no casualties."
