Bloomsday was first celebrated on the 16th of June 1954, the 50th anniversary of the day on which the story of James Joyce’s Ulysses took place. Poets Anthony Cronin (on the left) and Patrick Kavanagh (on the right) are pictured here with publisher John Ryan at the Martello tower in Sandycove, where Joyce once lived.
