A 1950s green An Post post box with black paper and white writing to show times for collection.

The civil service ran the post and telephone system in Ireland until 1984, when it was replaced by An Post and Telecom Éireann. The Department’s logo – P & T in Gaelic script – can still be seen on manholes covers around the city, at access points to the phone lines.

  1. Dolphin Hotel. This fine Gothic building is on East Essex Street. It was later converted into Dublin District Court offices.
  2. Royal Marine Hotel. Originally the Hayes Royal Hotel (1828), the hotel was bought in 1863 by William Dargan, builder of the Kingstown Railway, and was rebuilt and reopened as the Royal Marine Hotel in 1865.
  3. The Metropole Hotel. During the 1916 Rising this hotel, adjacent to the GPO, was completely destroyed. The same site is now home to Penney’s clothing store.
  4. Royal Hibernian Hotel. Formerly located on Dawson Street, this grand old hotel was demolished in the 1980s to make way for the Royal Hibernian Way.

Talbot, Coall and Son was an estate agent based in Dún Laoghaire, which was known as Kingstown until 1921. The firm was listed in the 1913 telephone directory at Kingstown 13. They once helped the family of J.M. Synge to buy a house in the area.

Models Dorothy Flynn, Peggy Cullen and Betty Whelan strike a pose for Colman Doyle at the top of Baggot Street. Betty Whelan, who had modelled for Christian Dior, founded her own modelling agency here in 1952. She was Arnotts’ regular hat model, the lady who launched a thousand hats, and a regular guest on the Late Late Show.

Colour picture of the destruction of Fitzwilliam Street dated 1967 when the ESB were building on the street.
Michael Byrne’s painting of ‘Derelict Dublin’ shows the destruction of Fitzwilliam Street in 1967, as the ESB knocked down several houses to build a new headquarters. Until then it had been the longest uninterrupted stretch of Georgian architecture in the world.

Colman Doyle was one of the first documentary-style photographers in Ireland. And this picture is a classic. It was taken in 1966 just after the Fianna Fáil leadership election. George Colley has just been informed that he’s lost the election to Jack Lynch, who is calling his wife to tell her the news. Seán Lemass, the retiring Taoiseach, is in the centre. Lynch was Lemass’s preferred candidate. He went on to serve two terms as Taoiseach.
