RTÉ has its origins in 1926, with the creation of 2RN, Ireland’s first radio station. The 1960 Broadcasting act changed its name to Radio Éireann, and made provisions for a new television channel, Telefís Éireann. The introduction of television in 1961 was a major catalyst for social change in Ireland, with imported British and American TV shows and home-grown content like the Late Late Show providing a platform for discussing taboo subjects like contraception and homosexuality.

White’s on the Green was a French restaurant owned by Peter White and his wife Alicia. Head chef Michael Clifford admired nouvelle cuisine, and fans of his cooking included Charles Haughey and Karl Lagerfeld. While only open for four years during a bleak period in Dublin’s culinary history, the restaurant had an influence.

This edition of the Freeman’s Journal lists the names of the four men executed the previous day, among them Michael Mallin who was in command of the garrison stationed across the road. It also gives the reaction of the British press, with the Manchester Guardian predicting: “Further executions can only create martyrs to refresh and renew the old bitterness between England and Ireland.”

During the ‘Emergency’ the Free State had a rationing system like that in Great Britain. Sugar, tea, butter, margarine, bread, flour and clothing were among the many items for which ration tickets were required. Poor families were hardest hit by the restrictions as bread was a central part of their diet. The most unpopular figure at the time was not Minister for Supplies Seán ‘half-ounce’ Lemass, but the notorious ‘glimmer man’ who went door-to-door to ensure that citizens were not using gas after hours.
