Zonder titelThe Barnardos bus provided pre-school education to children in areas with inadequate local resources. A familiar landmark in Rialto and on Sheriff Street, the bus had two classrooms and accommodated up to 20 children. A charge of 10p per day covered ‘bread’ provisions, but no child was ever refused for being unable to pay. Today Barnardos operates more than 40 centres in local communities across Ireland.
Zonder titelThere is a messer in every Dublin classroom. Jonathan Philbin Bowman was a freelance messer, at large in the city at a time – the late
1980s – when most of his peers were at school or college. The son of broadcaster John Bowman and his wife Dr Eimer Philbin Bowman, Jonathan had little time for conventional education, and was almost comically precocious. A fine mimic and boisterous conversationalist, he parlayed avocation as a journalist into an unlikely role at the centre of Dublin society. In the Coffee Inn, a famous dive-café on South Anne Street, the house speciality was the Bowman Burger (20p): one microwaved bowl of hot air. Their best customer was, of course, JPB. A great Dubliner, he died in 2000 at the age of 31.

Gay Byrne's Honorary Freedom of the City of Dublin awarded on 11 May 1999. It has a picture of the Late Late Show owl on the bottom.
Gay Byrne hosted RTÉ’s flagship talk show, the Late Late Show, for 37 years from its first broadcast in 1962. Byrne was a major catalyst in the transformation of Irish society, riffing on abortion, contraception and homosexuality. The Late Late Show featured an owl on its opening credits, hence the owl’s appearance on Byrne’s freedom of the city award. Byrne retired in 1999, but still pops up on Irish television.

Bicycle-wheel maker, barman, publican, councillor, senator, MP, and TD, Alderman Alfred Byrne is best remembered as Lord Mayor of Dublin. Between 1930 and 1939 Alfie, as he was affectionately known, monopolised the post of Lord Mayor, serving the city for nine consecutive terms. A one-man political machine, he was known as The Shaking Hand of Dublin for his eternal canvassing, and he always carried a bag of sweets with him for the poor children of Dublin. Byrne returned to the Mansion House in 1954 for his tenth and final term. This gift box once contained Urney’s chocolates from Belgard Road in Tallaght.
