LMODIndependent Artists poster, August 5-29 1970. "In 1970, events in the north-east of the country had led to an exposure of sharp polarities in attitude on the part of the public towards both political and cultural matters. The independent artists found themselves in conflict with a sclerotic art establishment unwilling to accept the evidence of deep disaffection within both cultural and educational spheres. In response to the authorities anemically repressive and otherwise indifferent attitude, the independents struck a defiant posture. Following discussion, the group appointed the late James McKenna and myself to draft a statement making clear our position. The result was the above "manifesto" - after I decided, reluctantly, to delete some of James's more rebarbative utterances. Not long afterwards the reigning Arts Council was dissolved by the government and a wholly new arts administration appointed." - Michael Kane, 2012.
