A letter with illustrations asking former student and cricket player to help fund the widening of the cricket pitch. Dated December 1910.

Just up the road from Patrick Pearse’s school, Scoil Éanna, there was a protestant boarding school, St. Columba’s College, where the aim was to furnish the sons of the landed gentry with a decent education. Here the college appeals to old boys for a few quid to widen the cricket pitch, a need that is all the greater in view of the upcoming game against sister school Radley.

The Irish Times front page for Dublin, Thursday, June 27, 1963 when American president John F Kennedy visited Ireland. Big picture of Kennedy greeting the crowds with De Valera also in the car. Includes articles on the Kennedy trip, transcript of De Valera and Kennedy’s greetings and an article on Kennedy’s trip to Berlin.

The visit of US President John F. Kennedy was seismic. Kennedy was mobbed by autograph-hunters at a garden party held in his honour at the home of the President. Six months later he was killed in Dallas. His address to both houses of the Oireachtas during his trip was a bravura performance; a sort of homecoming, as the Irish Times noted.

A site on Wood Quay was acquired by Dublin Corporation for their HQ in the 1970s. Excavations turned up a major viking settlement, but a vocal campaign to stop the construction of the new headquarters was unsuccessful. It was one of the key local battles of the decade.

A stamped license for 2 dogs under the ‘Dogs Regulation (Ireland) Act, 1865’ dated 30 March 1912.

From the minutely-detailed collie on the stamps to the requirement for the clerk to sign the form in two separate places, this Dog Licence is no simple record of payment. It is a monument to the fusty bureaucracy of the British Empire.

Bono joined the Virgin Prunes for a few songs at this gig in the Project Arts Centre. The Prunes were fronted by Gavin Friday, who was joined by fellow members of the ‘Lypton Village’ Guggi, David Watson, Strongman (Trevor Rowen), Dik Evans (brother of U2’s The Edge) and Anthony Murphy on drums.
