Twentieth Century
The Daily Mirror, newspaper dated Monday August 2 1915. Front page shows large photo. Text reads "What the armies have been facing for the past twelve months. This remarkable photograph was taken by a French dragoon while advancing against the enemy. It shows a German shell bursting between two lines while the men were charging with fixed bayonets by "leaps" of thirty yards. The picture, which is reproduced by courtesy of the Illustrated London News, was taken in a very bad light and during a heavy shower of rain. The dragoons are, of course, cavalry, but in this case are fighting on foot."
