Twentieth Century
The Barnardos bus provided pre-school education to children in areas with inadequate local resources. A familiar landmark in Rialto and on Sheriff Street, the bus had two classrooms and accommodated up to 20 children. A charge of 10p per day covered ‘bread’ provisions, but no child was ever refused for being unable to pay. Today Barnardos operates more than 40 centres in local communities across Ireland.
