Scope and content
Estella Frances Solomons (Irish, 1882-1968) Portfolio of 13 Etchings. A collection of cityscape,
landscape and portrait etchings, from a total edition of 70, printed by Patrick
Hickey at Graphic Studios, Dublin, 1973.
Estella Solomons was a prolific printmaker producing 90 etchings and a small number of lithographs and woodcuts. She attended the Metropolitan School of Art and Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, receiving tuition from printmaker George Atkinson and painter William Orpen, and was the first artist in Ireland to purchase her own printing press. She specialized in picturesque views of Dublin, which recall Whistler's urban scenes and was familiar with Rembrandt's etchings having visited Amsterdam in 1906. Solomons was proficient at combining crisp etching lines with finer hatched lines to convey atmosphere and to capture a moment in time.
